My Role

During my time at Relias I undertook various projects and collaborated with different teams. I began my time with Relias as an Ed Tech Developer which involved creating courses in RISE (an e-learning platform).

Later on in my internship I took on the role of motion designer and worked on higher-tier courses that involved separate more focused animations.

Part of the Work Flow

Participating in the corporate workflow provided me with the opportunity to engage with a diverse array of individuals and refine my expertise through valuable feedback loops.

I collaborated with various teams, including quality assurance, writers, project managers, scrum practitioners, and developers, each interaction allowing me to further develop my skills and contribute effectively to the projects at hand.

Training Healthcare Professionals

As an educational technology developer, my responsibility would involve crafting captivating lessons tailored for medical professionals specializing in Post Acute Care. These lessons would encompass a wide array of topics, ranging from medical procedures and dietary guidelines to physical therapy techniques and beyond.

The process typically begins with subject matter experts drafting the lesson content, which is then passed on to the development team. In my role, I would be tasked with transforming this text into comprehensive courses, ensuring proper formatting, and employing creative freedom in the placement of imagery and interactive elements. Additionally, I might need to update and recertify older videos or images in certain courses in collaboration with the subject matter experts.

Interactive

Courses had to be interactive to incentivize engagement in course learning. These would be done through accordions, cards, point pictures, etc.

Multilingual

To make a course support multiple languages it would need formatting to be consistent, audio to be remade, and other text artifacts in imagery to be changed.

Transcribed

Each course had an audio readout alongside them, which had to be an exact match to the text being displayed on the screen so that the reader wouldn't be confused.

Clear Formating

Utilizing clear formatting to enhance diversity and cultivate a more dynamic learning experience as users advance through lessons, I emphasized the significance of bullet points for conveying crucial information. Additionally, it was essential to intersperse imagery within the text to prevent monotony and facilitate comprehension.

Engagement Opportunities

Throughout courses, to promote engagement with course information, I would incorporate various interactive elements to assist users in making connections between imagery and definitions, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of the material.

Translating
Text to Motion

In the latter phase of my projects, I collaborated with multiple developers to enhance the expressiveness of their courses. Our process involved frequent meetings to explore opportunities for more intricate animations. If an idea complemented the course content, we would further develop characters and gather assets for the animations.

Following this, I would take the lead in animating characters and environments, providing regular updates to the team throughout the production process. Additionally, some courses required adjustments later on to accommodate various translations.

Informative

Given their role within the course, these motion graphics were crafted to both entertain users and seamlessly deliver essential information, ensuring clarity and coherence in the learning process.

Accurate

In addition to informing, the content had to be accurate, especially given its medical context, as inaccuracies could lead to misunderstandings or even harm to users understanding of medical concepts.

Entertaining

A primary focus of my motion graphics was to be entertaining, aiming to naturally engage users with the presented information.

Building Characters

Introducing characters requires a deep understanding of their mannerisms, encompassing how they speak, walk, move, and inhabit a space. For instance, if a character indulges in alcohol without restraint, how do they come across to others?

Keep it Consistent

It was crucial for characters in lessons to maintain consistency in their presentation and behavior. This consistency would enable viewers to develop a clear understanding of a character throughout the lesson and beyond.

Healthy Eating

This is a compilation of animated clips I've created for various sections of the Healthy Eating course. The lessons encompass topics such as cultivating good eating habits, as well as acquiring and preserving healthy food options.

Alcohol Use - Knowing Your Limits

This course delves into the diverse drinking habits of different characters. It was crucial to highlight that despite their individual differences and unique behaviors, all three characters engage in excessive alcohol consumption.

Looking Back...

This project marked my initiation into a corporate setting and larger, more organized teams. I found the division of work within a team particularly beneficial, as it relieved me of the sole responsibility I was accustomed to in school projects. This setup enabled me to concentrate on my areas of expertise and handle multiple projects concurrently.

Working with Relias and contributing to medical courses was an enriching experience for me. I valued the opportunity to passively absorb knowledge while actively engaged in course development. Furthermore, the feedback loop from quality assurance, fellow team members, and subject matter experts was invaluable in refining my work and enhancing my skills.
